June 14, 2023 – CSX congratulates Heidelberg Materials on the official opening of its new rail-served, environmentally advanced cement plant at Mitchell, Indiana.
Heidelberg Materials invested more than $600 million in the plant, which features the latest advances in energy-efficient concrete production technology and environmental controls. Throughout design and construction, CSX collaborated with Heidelberg Materials on enhancing and expanding the rail infrastructure to support efficient railcar movements at the plant.
“The Heidelberg Materials team and its contractors showed tremendous vision not only in designing and building a state-of-the-art cement production facility, but also in ensuring it would achieve supply chain efficiencies through increased use of rail,” said Kevin Boone, CSX executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. “Our commercial, industrial development and transportation teams all worked closely with Heidelberg to optimize the facility for rail service.”
Heidelberg Materials is a German company that is one of the largest global cement producers. The new Mitchell facility replaces a plant that was more than 50 years old to better support the company’s existing customer base in the Midwest while also expanding its reach in a growing market.
